Day 29: A book everyone hated, but that I loved.

For some reason, Crime and Punishment gets me so fired up. I absolutely love this book and that’s probably not something you will often hear out of the mouth of a 19 year old modern American woman. I have not met one person that enjoys Dostoevsky’s work as much as I do. Primarily because this is often a required school reading, and I chose to read it on my own time. This book requires that you take your time with it and that you lazily explore all the characters and plot points with it. I think everyone should try to read this book, at least once all the way through, because it has some very interesting insights into the human mind, which is what we all crave from our literature.

A side effect to the whole back surgery thing is that I occasionally get these weird, rolling muscle spasms if I am sitting in just the right position. The thing is, they don’t hurt. They are just there.

Day 26: A book that changed your opinion about something.

Do you think that the Bible (specifically the Old Testament Prophets) are boring? Do you groan at the thought of having to read the words of people long dead? Than you are exactly like me and this is the book for you.

I read this book last year, at the request of my mentor, and at first I dreaded it. It looks like a textbook. It looks super boring and has a lame font. But the appearance of the book doesn’t matter at all. Inside, Newsome manages to communicate all of the poetic beauty and intense social justice of these prophets. MIxing historical information and flawless hermeneutics, this book will change the way you view the prophets of the Old Testament.

The prophet books are now my favorite things to read, so I would say, opinion successfully changed.

My dad bought me a gas mask at the Pate Swap Meet today. I have been wanting to do a series with one for a few years now, and today marks day one. Just self portraits, nothing too fancy, but it was an excuse to use my new lens and do a shoot where I don’t actually have to make facial expressions.. although normally I don’t anyways.. Have a look and prepare yourselves for the next Y2K.
